You may have never heard of them, and you almost certainly can't pronounce their names, but the words Methylisothiazolinone and Methylchloroisothiazolinone, which are more commonly referred to as MI and MCI, are getting a lot of attention lately. These two tongue twisting chemical compounds are actually preservatives that are commonly used in household products like cleaners, cosmetics, and detergents. The reason that MI and MCI are generating attention is because of recently generated reports that these preservatives may trigger allergic reactions in some people.

MI is added to products like toothpaste, hand soap, lotion, makeup, wet wipes, and many other products that are used for cleaning or applied to the skin. The preservative is thought to prevent the growth of certain types of bacteria and has been growing in use among major manufacturers in recent years. A recent study by the European Commission concluded that MI is safe for most consumers, but only when used in very small doses and in products that don't remain on the skin. The greater frequency with which MI has been appearing in every day products has increased Americans' exposure and been found to trigger reactions in people with sensitive skin.
In 2013, the Dermatitis Society named MI its Allergen of the Year and in an article for the New York Times, the society's president, Dr. Bruce A. Brod, said "when people are exposed on a daily basis to MI, we think the rates of sensitization are going up."
